“When the entomophobic hunter becomes the hunted,” published in The News Journal August 2, 2015, Awarded Third Place in Newspaper/News Website – Humor Category
WILMINGTON, DE — July 27, 2016 — Steven M. Kendus’ Hunter’s Journal column “When the entomophobic hunter becomes the hunted” was awarded third place in the Outdoor Writers Association of America (OWAA) 2016 Excellence in Craft Contest Newspaper/News Website – Humor category. The column was originally published in The News Journal on August 6, 2015.
The OWAA announced the 2016 Excellence in Craft Contest winners and presented prize money, plaques, and certificates to winners at their 89th annual conference in Billings, Montana on July 17. The OWAA is the oldest and largest association of professional outdoor communicators in the United States and includes writers, photographers, outdoors radio- and television-show hosts, book authors, videographers, lecturers, and artists dedicated to sharing the outdoor experience.
Providing a humorous look at a man-versus-beast battle between Kendus and a giant, dragonlike insect, “When the entomophobic hunter becomes the hunted” garnered widespread attention via social media. The column also received a third place award in the 2016 Delaware Press Association Communications Contest in May.
“The response to the article has been crazy,” said Kendus. “People from all walks of life – including one of my high school English teachers who I haven’t seen in more than 25 years – reached out to tell me how much they enjoyed the article.”
